Autonomous vehicles must perceive the world around them to navigate safely. This perception relies on sensors—devices that capture information about the environment and convert it into data the vehicle's computers can process. Understanding the different sensor types, their capabilities, and their limitations reveals how autonomous vehicles "see" and why multiple sensor types are typically used together.
Cameras: The Visual Sensors
Cameras are the most intuitive sensors for autonomous vehicles because they capture the same visual information humans use to drive. Modern autonomous vehicles typically use multiple cameras positioned around the vehicle to provide 360-degree coverage, with additional cameras for specific purposes like reading traffic signs or monitoring blind spots.
Cameras excel at capturing rich visual detail. They can read text on signs, recognize traffic light colors, identify lane markings, and distinguish between different types of road users. This semantic information—understanding what things are, not just where they are—is cameras' primary strength.
However, cameras have significant limitations. They struggle in low light conditions, though this is improving with better sensors and image processing. Direct sunlight can cause glare and overexposure. Rain, snow, and fog degrade image quality. Cameras also don't directly measure distance—depth must be inferred from image analysis or stereo camera pairs, which is less accurate than direct measurement.
Camera technology continues to advance rapidly. Higher resolution sensors capture more detail. Better dynamic range handles challenging lighting. Thermal cameras can see in complete darkness. These improvements expand what camera-based perception can accomplish.
Different sensor types provide complementary information about the vehicle's environment.
Radar: The Distance Sensor
Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) uses radio waves to detect objects and measure their distance and velocity. Radar has been used in vehicles for decades—adaptive cruise control systems have relied on radar since the 1990s. For autonomous vehicles, radar provides reliable distance measurement and velocity detection that complements camera data.
Radar's key strength is its ability to work in almost any weather condition. Radio waves pass through rain, snow, and fog with minimal degradation. Radar also works equally well in daylight and darkness. This all-weather, all-lighting capability makes radar essential for robust perception.
Radar directly measures both distance and velocity using the Doppler effect. This velocity measurement is particularly valuable for tracking moving objects and predicting their future positions. Radar can detect a vehicle approaching from behind and determine its closing speed, enabling collision avoidance systems.
Traditional radar has limited resolution—it can detect that something is there but provides less detail about what it is. However, newer high-resolution radar and 4D imaging radar are improving this limitation, providing more detailed information about object shape and classification.
Lidar: The 3D Mapper
Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) uses laser pulses to create detailed 3D maps of the environment. A lidar sensor emits thousands of laser pulses per second, measuring the time each pulse takes to return after bouncing off objects. This creates a "point cloud"—a 3D representation of everything around the vehicle.
Lidar provides precise distance measurement with centimeter-level accuracy. This precision enables detailed understanding of object shapes and positions. Lidar can detect the exact boundaries of vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles, enabling precise path planning.
The 3D point cloud from lidar is particularly valuable for understanding complex scenes. While cameras provide 2D images that must be interpreted, lidar directly provides 3D geometry. This makes it easier to detect objects, measure distances, and understand spatial relationships.
Lidar has its own limitations. It's more expensive than cameras or radar, though costs have dropped dramatically. Lidar performance degrades in heavy rain or snow, as water droplets scatter the laser pulses. Some lidar systems struggle with highly reflective or very dark surfaces. And lidar doesn't capture color or texture information—it sees geometry but not appearance.

How Sensors Work Together
No single sensor type is sufficient for autonomous driving. Each has strengths and weaknesses that complement the others. Most autonomous vehicles use all three sensor types together, combining their data through a process called sensor fusion.
Cameras provide semantic understanding—recognizing what objects are. Lidar provides precise 3D geometry—knowing exactly where objects are. Radar provides reliable detection in all conditions and direct velocity measurement. Together, they create a more complete and reliable picture than any single sensor could provide.
Sensor fusion combines data from multiple sensors to create a unified understanding of the environment. This might involve using camera data to classify an object that lidar detected, or using radar to track an object through conditions where cameras struggle. The fusion process must handle disagreements between sensors and weight each sensor's contribution based on conditions.
Redundancy is another benefit of multiple sensors. If one sensor fails or is degraded by conditions, others can compensate. A camera blinded by sun glare might miss an obstacle that lidar detects. Radar might track a vehicle through heavy rain that degrades both camera and lidar. This redundancy improves overall system reliability.
The Sensor Debate
Despite the benefits of multi-sensor systems, there's ongoing debate about which sensors are truly necessary. Tesla famously relies primarily on cameras, arguing that if humans can drive with vision alone, so can AI. Other companies insist that lidar is essential for safe autonomous driving.
The camera-only approach has cost advantages—cameras are inexpensive and can be integrated into vehicle designs without the bulky hardware that lidar requires. Advances in AI-based depth estimation are improving cameras' ability to understand 3D geometry from 2D images.
The multi-sensor approach prioritizes redundancy and reliability. Proponents argue that the cost of lidar is justified by the safety benefits, and that relying on a single sensor type creates unnecessary risk. They point to edge cases where camera-only systems have failed.
This debate may be resolved by technology evolution. As lidar costs continue to fall and camera-based perception continues to improve, the tradeoffs will shift. The "right" answer may also depend on the application—robotaxis operating in defined areas may have different requirements than consumer vehicles sold worldwide.
