Learning-Based Challenges

Planning and control often use rule-based approaches or hybrid systems. Safety constraints can be enforced through rules. Decision-making logic can be made explicit and verifiable. Some systems use learning for initial trajectory generation but apply rule-based safety checks.
Safety layers typically use rules. Regardless of what learning-based components decide, rule-based safety systems can enforce hard constraints—never accelerate toward a detected obstacle, always maintain minimum following distance. These rules provide a safety net around learned behavior.
The trend is toward more learning-based approaches as AI capabilities improve. Tesla's recent systems use end-to-end neural networks for more of the driving task. But even these systems incorporate rule-based elements for safety-critical functions. The optimal balance continues to evolve as technology advances.
