Weather presents one of the greatest challenges for autonomous vehicles. Rain, snow, fog, and extreme temperatures all affect sensor performance and driving conditions. Understanding how autonomous vehicles handle these challenges reveals both the impressive capabilities and current limitations of the technology.
Rain and Wet Conditions
Rain affects autonomous vehicles in multiple ways. Water on sensors degrades perception. Wet roads change vehicle dynamics. Reduced visibility affects both the vehicle and other road users.
Sensor challenges in rain are significant. Water droplets on camera lenses blur images. Lidar beams scatter off raindrops, creating noise in the point cloud. Radar is less affected but can still experience degradation in heavy rain.
Sensor cleaning systems help maintain perception. Many autonomous vehicles have wipers or air jets that clear water from camera lenses. Some use hydrophobic coatings that cause water to bead and roll off. Heated sensors prevent water from freezing on surfaces.
Driving adaptations account for reduced traction. The vehicle increases following distances, reduces speeds, and brakes more gently. These adaptations mirror what careful human drivers do in wet conditions.
Spray from other vehicles creates additional challenges. A truck passing on the highway can temporarily blind cameras with spray. Systems must handle these transient occlusions without overreacting.
Snow and Ice
Snow presents even greater challenges than rain. It obscures lane markings, changes road surfaces, and can accumulate on sensors.
Lane marking occlusion is a fundamental problem. Autonomous vehicles rely heavily on lane markings for positioning. When snow covers these markings, vehicles must use alternative cues—road edges, other vehicles' tracks, or high-definition maps that show lane positions.
Sensor accumulation occurs when snow builds up on sensors. Unlike rain, snow doesn't simply run off. Heated sensors help, but heavy snowfall can still cause problems. Some vehicles have mechanical systems to clear snow from sensors.
Traction challenges on snow and ice require careful control. The vehicle must detect reduced traction and adapt its driving accordingly. Sudden acceleration, braking, or steering can cause loss of control on slippery surfaces.
Plowed snow banks change road geometry. Lanes may be narrower, and the road edge may be different from what maps show. Vehicles must perceive and adapt to these temporary changes.

Fog and Low Visibility
Fog reduces visibility for both cameras and lidar, though in different ways. Handling fog requires understanding these effects and adapting accordingly.
Camera limitations in fog mirror human vision limitations. Dense fog can reduce camera visibility to just a few meters. Unlike humans, cameras can't "see through" fog any better by squinting or concentrating.
Lidar in fog experiences scattering. Laser beams bounce off fog particles, creating false returns and reducing range. The denser the fog, the worse the effect. Some lidar wavelengths are more affected than others.
Radar advantages become important in fog. Radar waves pass through fog with minimal attenuation, maintaining detection range. This is one reason why sensor fusion—combining multiple sensor types—is valuable.
Speed adaptation is essential in fog. The vehicle must slow down so that stopping distance doesn't exceed visibility distance. If the vehicle can only see 30 meters ahead, it must be able to stop within 30 meters.
Extreme Temperatures
Very hot or cold temperatures affect both sensors and vehicle systems. Autonomous vehicles must operate reliably across a wide temperature range.
Cold weather effects include battery range reduction, sensor fogging, and potential ice formation on sensors. Batteries provide less range in cold weather, affecting operational planning. Sensors may fog up when moving between temperature extremes.
Hot weather effects include sensor overheating and computing system thermal management. Cameras and computers generate heat that must be dissipated. In extreme heat, this becomes more difficult, potentially requiring reduced operation.
Thermal management systems maintain appropriate temperatures for sensitive components. Heating and cooling systems keep sensors and computers within operating ranges. These systems consume energy, affecting vehicle range.
Sun Glare
Direct sunlight can overwhelm cameras, creating temporary blindness similar to what human drivers experience.
Camera saturation occurs when bright light exceeds the sensor's dynamic range. The affected area of the image becomes pure white, losing all detail. This can hide important information like traffic signals or pedestrians.
HDR imaging helps by capturing multiple exposures and combining them. This extends the effective dynamic range, allowing cameras to see detail in both bright and dark areas simultaneously.
Sensor redundancy provides backup when one sensor is affected. If a forward camera is blinded by sun glare, lidar and radar continue to provide information. Multiple cameras at different angles may not all be affected simultaneously.

Current Limitations
Despite significant progress, weather remains a limiting factor for autonomous vehicle deployment.
Operational restrictions are common. Many robotaxi services don't operate during heavy rain, snow, or fog. This limits service availability and reliability, particularly in regions with frequent adverse weather.
Geographic constraints result from weather limitations. Early autonomous vehicle deployments have concentrated in areas with mild, predictable weather—Phoenix, San Francisco, parts of China. Expanding to regions with harsh winters or monsoon seasons requires solving additional challenges.
Ongoing research addresses weather challenges. Companies are developing better sensors, more robust algorithms, and improved cleaning systems. Progress is being made, but all-weather autonomous driving remains an unsolved problem.
The goal is autonomous vehicles that can operate in any conditions a human driver could handle—and eventually, conditions humans find challenging. Achieving this goal will require continued innovation in sensors, algorithms, and vehicle design.
